6 Ways to Improve Your Golf Body and Swing Speed This Offseason
My Body and Health Plan Resources
As we approach the off-season here in Minnesota, I am thinking through the things I will strive for in order to start the next season in the best possible position.
This post will focus on the plan and resources I will use to continue developing my health and strength.
Strength and Flexibility
Ben Johnson, Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (bcjohnson413@gmail.com)
One of my brothers, Ben, has experience training athletes and developing their bodies to perform at top levels. I will use him as a resource as I seek to address movement deficiencies and increase my strength. Ben offers monthly training programs which you can also sign up for via the email listed above. Ben sends me monthly workout plans which fit my schedule so I can stay consistent with my workouts and focus on the right areas.
ATG Coaching aka Kneesovertoesguy
I really appreciate the information provided by Ben Patrick with regards to overcoming past injuries by developing strength through the full range of motion. I have suffered my own knee and shoulder injuries and Ben P. presents his information in a easy to follow way that appears to get great results. As I get older, I need to focus on injury prevention AND maintaining/gaining explosiveness.
I will focus on using his ZERO program as Ben demonstrates with Paul Saladino in the video below:
Increase Golf Swing Speed
In addition to the strength and flexibility work, I plan to use these resources to increase my swing speed this offseason.
These are the OG swing speed sticks and as I have a set of them in my car, they will continue to be my go to. Consistency will be the key here. I believe if I consistently perform these workouts (~5-10 minutes), I can gain 7 - 10 mph of swing speed.
George Haggerty, Movement Pro and Professional Long Drive Competitor
George follows quite a bit of the ideas behind GOATA. I like including these different movement practices into my day to ensure I am reversing some of the effects of sitting that I get from work. At the link above, George has workouts and exercises that you can sign up for. He also uses his experience as a long drive competitor to explain ways to increase golf swing speed while avoiding injuries.
Overall Health
Jay has great resources exploring ways to support our metabolism and allow our bodies to operate at peak condition. He recently released a “Energy Balance Food Guide” which is excellent and provides great visuals for foods that support or energy production and health.
I like using this guide to do my grocery shopping and finding recipes to support my metabolism and allow me to recover from my workouts.
I did a coach session earlier this year with Bryan and we spent most of the session focusing on vestibular/eye drills. During our initial conversation, Bryan and I discussed the variety of injuries I’ve had from past sports and issues that I continue to suffer. The vestibular drills are a way to rehabilitate the nervous system and allow our body to function optimally. I saw immediate increases and range of motion and when I am diligent with my exercises I see improvements in movement, energy, sleep, and digestion. Here’s a short video of Bryan demonstrating some ways to use eye drill to move better.
Wrap Up
I encourage you to explore these resources for yourself but these are things that I have found helpful for me thus far. I look forward to digging into each of these more this offseason as I continue to develop and grow. Putting together a specific plan to improve and executing it does not have to be rocket science but resources like these can simplify things.
I know I often get overwhelmed by the amount of information but in a podcast I recently listened to, they mentioned people often get caught up in the question of How vs. Who. We don’t need to become experts in all of these things to get benefits. We can enlist the help of experts such as those above to help us achieve our goals.
I would love to hear what you all are doing or have tried in the past as well! Leave a comment sharing the top ways you take care of your body!
Until next time,
Enjoy the odyssey!
